Treating Sleep Apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common condition that is often mistaken for simple snoring. The condition occurs when mouth and throat tissues block the airway as you sleep, causing you to stop breathing for several seconds before your body wakes and starts breathing again. As tissues gather in the airway, they cause increasingly loud snoring, though patients who exhibit OSA may not realize the extent of their condition until they seek a professional assessment.
When left untreated, OSA can lead to prolonged oxygen and sleep deprivation, which can in turn have detrimental effects on your overall health. For some patients, treatment may involve a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine, which provides gentle air pressure to keep the airway clear. As a more comfortable and discreet solution, however, Dr. Carmona may be able to provide a custom-made sleep guard that achieves the same goal, but by keeping the lower jaw resting more comfortably.
