What To Ask When Considering VeneersYou may know that you want to update your smile, but you may not be sure how you want to do it. Maybe you are concerned you have multiple cosmetic concerns to address, and to so would be a complicated process. You should know that with porcelain veneers, patients can typically enjoy a complete smile makeover with a single treatment. If you are considering porcelain veneers to improve your smile, then there are a few questions that you may want to discuss with your dental health professional.

What Issues Can Be Addressed?

Before recommending porcelain veneers, your dentist or prosthodontist will carefully examine your smile to diagnose the nature and extent of any of your smile’s issues. Veneers can be a great option for addressing a wide variety of issues from severe discoloration to chipped or cracked teeth to unevenly sized or shaped teeth to large gaps and beyond. If you have issues that go beyond cosmetic into the health of your teeth, you may require different kinds of treatment for restoration.

What Is the Process Like?

Porcelain veneers are wafer thin shells made of porcelain, which is a material very similar to your tooth’s natural enamel in form and function. The veneer shells typically measure at less than 0.5 mm in thickness. To place the shell on the tooth, a minimal amount of tooth’s enamel will be sculpted from your tooth’s front surface. The preparation will be as conservative as possible, which means that only as much tooth material will be removed as required for the veneer to fit comfortably on your tooth.

How Long Do Veneers Last?

When cared for properly, porcelain veneers can usually last for up to 10-15 years. They can eventually wear down over the years and require replacement. Proper care includes good hygiene at home, and attending regular preventive checkups and cleanings at your dentist’s office.
