This year marks the 59th season of the Zilker Summer Musical at the Zilker Hillside Theater in Austin’s historic Zilker Park. Zilker Theatre Productions (ZTP) is a non-profit company and is the longest running outdoor theatre company in the country. ZTP provides free admission entertainment to folks from Austin and elsewhere. The City of Austin works with ZTP to maintain the beautiful stage at the Hillside Theater. ZTP also works with local area schools to provide the schools with access to their costumes, lights, etc. This year the selected musical is the classic, The Wizard of Oz. The musical is based on the book of the same name by L. Frank Baum. The musical was Broadway’s biggest hit in 1903 and inspired the 1939 film starring Judy Garland. Judy Garland won an Academy Award for her role as Dorothy. The musical is magical for both children and adults. It can be even more magical when seen under the stars outside at Zilker Hillside Theater. Bring your own blankets and low-backed chairs. The curtain goes up at dusk, usually at 8;15pm, but arrive early to find a spot to sit.
