Holidays & Keeping Teeth Healthy The holiday season is in full swing. Hanukkah has just begun and Christmas is around the corner. This time of year can cause a lot of people to throw caution to the wind when it comes to their health. Starting around Halloween, some people just give into the sugar around them and vow to do better in the New Year. Sadly, that kind of mindset, even just for a few months, can cause a lot of damage to your teeth. However, there are a few things that can help keep your smile and your family’s smiles healthy during the holidays.

Hygiene and Dental Visits

Between holiday parties, shopping, family visits, recitals, and more, it can be easy to let your routine slip away. Maybe you give yourself a few passes on going to bed without brushing or flossing. Maybe you skip that dental appointment to make time for some gift shopping. No matter how busy you get, it is important to remember the basics. Brushing and flossing at least twice a day is important to keep dangerous bacteria out of your mouth. Routine dental visits and cleanings should happen at least twice a year.

Drink Water

Saliva is your body’s natural way of defending your teeth and gums. It rinses away leftover food and drink particles, as well as harmful bacteria. Water helps to induce saliva production and it also helps to rinse away problematic debris. When you are indulging in sweet drinks or sweet treats, water can help rinse away potential danger.  Water is also a great way to keep your mouth and body hydrated.

Healthy Swaps

Balance and moderation are key. If your family’s tradition is drinking hot cocoa and making Christmas cookies, you should be able to do that without guilt. To balance that out, you can eat plenty of vegetables. You can use chopped up red and green bell peppers to build holiday houses.
